Dan and Kitty stumbled across two acres in the North Valley near Albuquerque in the spring of 1990. While turning around in the driveway of the abandoned property, they just barely noticed the hand painted "FOR SALE BY OWNER" sign stuck in the weeds in the fence. They were on a search for a new home when luck came their way.

The house had been vacant for two years and the land was unkempt, however Dan and Kitty saw potential. At first, the realtors, whom they had been working with, would not get out of their car to look at the property (they were thinking commission). Dan and Kitty eventually bargained with the owner from Denver and soon realized they had more than land on the property. Added benefits, at first unappreciated, included two wells and access to the centuries old acequia, in the backyard. Water in the desert!

The following year (1991) Dan and Kitty, with the help of their two daughters, planted 150 fruit trees - apples, peaches, plums, and nectarines. After trial and error with the irrigation, including a few local "floods", the trees grew and started producing enough to sell at the Los Ranchos de Albuquerque Growers market that Dan and Kitty started with the help of a few friends. A few more years of winter pruning and Dan realized that row crops of chilies, tomatoes, and okra might be a better investment of his time, and less demanding in the middle of winter. Meanwhile, the raised beds they installed in the front of the house were producing ample table vegetables and bringing in seed money. All things considered, they were busy remodeling a 70+ year old house, working full-time, and maintaining the day-to-day activities of agriculture.

They practiced their philosophy from the first planting: no pesticides, no herbicides. From that emerged a somewhat harmonious and dynamic balance between the predator and the prey-especially when it came to the insects and their agricultural interests. This is still true today, as there are an abundance of ladybugs, praying mantises, parasitic flies and wasps, and the food upon which they feed. The resulting product is perfectly clean of chemicals and is best eaten off the tree, or fresh picked from the garden.
